Coral Extinction: A Ring Design by Sardonna Hin Ting Tsui

Bringing Attention to the Beauty and Importance of Coral

Coral reefs are vital ecosystems that provide habitats for thousands of species in the ocean. However, due to human activity and other factors, coral is facing extinction. Tsui's inspiration for this design stems from her concern for the future of coral and the urgent need to protect these delicate organisms.

The series of rings is an abstract interpretation of coral's deterioration. Each ring represents a different stage in the life of coral. The first stage portrays a healthy and prosperous coral reef, with paper covered in silver to symbolize the lack of recognition of coral's value. In the second stage, the coral begins to deteriorate, revealing half its skeleton and half coral polyps, while the silver becomes more prominent, signifying the growing awareness of its value. Finally, the third stage represents the extinction of coral, with the inside skeleton exposed and devoid of polyps. The entire ring is made of silver, symbolizing the acknowledgment of coral's worth.

These rings are not only visually striking but also serve as a reminder of the urgent need to protect coral reefs. By wearing the rings on the interior of the hand, the coral is symbolically treasured and its importance is emphasized. The large size and weight of the rings further highlight their significance, ensuring that viewers cannot ignore their existence.

The rings are meticulously crafted using sterling silver and Mitsumata tissue paper. The design process involves 3D modeling, printing, casting, and fabrication. The final step includes applying white glue and inserting tissue paper through the holes on the ring to create texture and color.

Developed in Toronto, Canada, this project took approximately seven months to complete. Tsui conducted extensive research on the importance of coral and the reasons behind its extinction. She also delved into the various forms and structures of coral, as well as the technical processes involved in 3D modeling, printing, and fabrication.

This innovative design by Sardonna Hin Ting Tsui has received recognition in the form of the Iron A' Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Tsui's ring design stands out for its ability to integrate industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
